Textiles Study Day and Lampshade Workshop

This will be a day of two halves. In the morning there will be an introduction to Indian textiles hightlighting their global significance historically and today. We will also look at some traditional techniques and motifs. We will then have a tour of Bowood House focusing on the Lansdowne family's connection to India and looking at Indian textiles on display. In the afternoon you will create your own lampshade made with beautiful Indian fabric. I have a huge collection for you to choose from or you are more than welcome to bring your own.

ON THE DAY

  • Introductory talk and presentition about Indian Textiles

  • Guided tour of Bowood House

  • We will look at what makes the perfect lampshade, making sure the fabric you use suits your ideas.

  • Working through the steps to create a bespoke drum or cone shape lampshade using hard PVC backing.

  • The lampshades will be 25cm at the base and can be made to fit a lamp or a ceiling light.

  • Cutting fabric and backing to your specific needs. No pre-cut sizes here!

  • All materials are included.

  • Your fee includes entrance to Bowood House and Gardens.

  • Lunch is not included but you will be entitled to a discount in the café.

  • Lampshade making can be fiddly and hard on your hands. Please consider this if you have any issues with your hands and wrists.

  • After the course, you are welcome to wander the grounds and Bowood House at leisure. Please note Bowood House & Gardens closes at 5:00pm. No dogs allowed.

YOUR IDEAS

Please feel free to discuss with me any specific ideas in advance and I can let you know if they are feasible. I am happy to advise on fabrics if you want to bring your own. If you want to make a pair of shades you will be able to purchase the parts for the second shade from me on the day.


CANCELLATIONS

Please give me as much warning as possible if you are unable to attend. Unfortunately I will not be able to offer a refund after two weeks before the workshop unless I can find someone else to take your place If I am unable to get a minimum of 5 participants I will sadly have to cancel. I will give you 5 days notice and a full refund or the option to book an alternative date.
